Have you ever watched your child walk past the thing you asked them to do — three times — without doing it?

Not because they forgot. Not because they’re ignoring you. Not because they don’t care.

Because the moment it left their visual field, it genuinely ceased to exist in their awareness.

Or maybe you’ve noticed that the homework is always done — it just never makes it back to the bag. That the permission slip was signed and then vanished into a dimension only ADHD children can access. That the water bottle is refilled every single day and left on the counter every single day because the bag is in the other room and the bag is therefore not real right now.

This is object permanence. And it’s one of those ADHD traits that sounds almost too simple to be significant — until you start seeing how many daily frustrations it explains.


What Object Permanence Actually Means

In developmental psychology, object permanence refers to a baby’s understanding that things continue to exist even when they can’t be seen. It’s why peek-a-boo delights a four-month-old — to them, your face genuinely disappears behind your hands and reappears like magic. By around eight to twelve months, most babies develop the understanding that objects persist even when hidden.

So what does this have to do with ADHD?

In ADHD, object permanence works differently — not at the level of basic cognitive development, but at the level of working memory and attentional awareness. The ADHD brain has a significantly harder time holding things in mind that aren’t directly in front of it. Not because the knowledge isn’t there, but because the mental representation of the thing — the internal reminder that it exists and matters — doesn’t stay active without external cues to support it.

Out of sight isn’t just out of mind.

It’s out of existence.


What This Looks Like in Daily Life

Once you have the language for this, you’ll start seeing it everywhere.

The vanishing task. You ask your child to put their shoes away, and they head in that direction — genuinely intending to do it — and then something catches their attention on the way and the shoes are gone from their mental landscape entirely. By the time they get to the other room, there is no shoes task. There is only whatever is in front of them now.

The invisible object. The lunchbox is in the fridge. Your child opens the fridge, stares directly at the lunchbox, and closes the fridge to tell you there’s nothing to eat. The lunchbox wasn’t in their attentional field in that moment — so the lunchbox wasn’t there.

The completed-but-undelivered task. The homework is done. The form is signed. The thing they were supposed to bring is ready. But it exists in the place where it was completed, and the place where it needs to go is a different location with a different context — and the connection between the two never fires. This is why finished work doesn’t make it into the backpack, why signed forms live on the kitchen counter for weeks, why the library book sits by the door for four days and still doesn’t get returned.

The out-of-routine object. When things are always in the same place, they’re findable — because the routine itself is the cue. But the moment something is moved, or lives somewhere slightly different, or is part of a new system, it becomes effectively invisible. Not because your child is careless. Because without the established visual cue, the mental representation doesn’t activate.


Why This Is Not Forgetfulness — And Why That Distinction Matters

Parents often describe this as their child forgetting things. And it looks like forgetting. But the mechanism is meaningfully different — and understanding the difference changes how you respond to it.

Forgetting implies the information was encoded and then lost. What’s happening with ADHD object permanence is more like the information never fully makes it into active awareness in the first place — or can’t stay there without ongoing external support.

This is a working memory difference, not a memory difference. Your child’s long-term memory may be perfectly intact. What’s different is the system that keeps things active and present in the moment — the mental sticky note that says this exists, this matters, this needs to happen.

That system, in the ADHD brain, is unreliable. It drops things. Not selectively, not strategically, not as a choice.

It just drops them.

Which means consequences and reminders aimed at making your child try harder to remember are addressing the wrong thing entirely. You can’t willpower your way to a better working memory. What you can do is build an environment that does the remembering for you.


Working With It Instead of Against It

The most effective strategies for ADHD object permanence are environmental, not motivational. The goal is to make the important things visible, physical, and impossible to move past without engaging.

Make it visual. If it needs to happen, it needs to be seen. Whiteboards, sticky notes, visual checklists in the spaces where the task needs to occur — not in a notebook, not on a phone, not somewhere they have to remember to check. The cue needs to exist in the physical environment where the action happens.

Keep it in the path. If the library book needs to go back, it goes directly in front of the door. Not near the door. Not on the shelf by the door. In front of the door, where it is physically impossible to leave without encountering it. Object permanence can’t drop something that’s blocking the exit.

One location, always. For things that matter — keys, bags, water bottles, shoes — one designated spot that never changes. The routine is the memory. When the place is always the same, the object becomes findable even when it’s not in active awareness, because the habit does the work that working memory can’t.

The backpack rule. Anything that needs to travel somewhere else gets put directly into the bag the moment it’s done — not when they’re ready to leave, not before bed, right now, while they’re still in the context where it was completed. The journey from “done” to “in the bag” needs to happen in one uninterrupted movement, because the moment the task context changes, the connection breaks.

Verbal plus physical. When giving instructions, pair the verbal request with a physical cue — walking to the location together, touching the object, demonstrating the action. The physical engagement creates a stronger imprint than words alone and gives the brain more than one channel to encode the information through.

Object permanence differences can make homeschooling logistics genuinely challenging — but they can also make homeschooling a real advantage.

There are no toys in a Grade 1 classroom. Let them play, and think about that for a moment.

A child turns six years old, walks through the school doors in September, and receives a message — not spoken out loud, but communicated clearly through every shelf, every desk, every structured minute of the day:

Play is over now. You’re here to learn.

As if those two things were ever separate.

As if play were something to be grown out of rather than grown through.

We have decided, as a society, that play belongs to the very young — and that the business of childhood is really the business of preparing children to be productive adults as quickly as possible. Toys disappear from classrooms. Recess shrinks. Free time becomes a reward rather than a right. And somewhere around the middle years of elementary school, a new enforcer arrives that no teacher could ever match in power:

Social judgment.


The Moment Play Becomes Shameful

By the time children reach middle school, the message has been received and internalised so thoroughly that they’re enforcing it on each other.

The child who still wants to run around the yard pretending to be a horse. The one who still plays with action figures in their room. The one who still loses hours in an elaborate imaginary world of their own construction — villages, barnyards, fantasy kingdoms, entire civilisations built from cardboard and felt and whatever was in the recycling bin.

These children exist. There are more of them than you’d think.

But many of them have learned to hide it.

I know this because I overheard a conversation I’ve never forgotten.

My daughter was eleven. She was homeschooled, and play was a central, daily, completely unapologetic part of her life. In our basement she had built an elaborate barnyard — plastic horses with tiny felt saddles she’d sewn herself at her art table, giant barns constructed from cardboard boxes and popsicle sticks, an entire world she’d created and maintained and returned to for hours at a time. It was extraordinary. It was imaginative and detailed and completely, developmentally, exactly what an eleven-year-old should be doing.

Her best friend came to visit. She went to public school.

I overheard her friend say, quietly, “You’re so lucky you get to play. I wish I could be younger again so it would be okay for me to play with my horses.”

She was eleven years old.

She had already learned that her desire to play was something to be ashamed of. Something that belonged to a younger version of herself she needed to leave behind. She didn’t need an adult to tell her — her peers had handled that.

That sentence has stayed with me ever since.

I wish I could be younger again so it would be okay.

A child should never have to wish that.


What Is Play Really?

We have fundamentally misunderstood what play is and what it does.

Play is not what children do instead of learning. Play is how children learn — how they always have, across every culture and every era of human history until we decided to systematise childhood into productivity.

Through play, children develop executive functioning — planning, sequencing, problem solving, flexible thinking. They develop emotional regulation — navigating the frustrations of a game, the social dynamics of collaborative play, the disappointment of things not going as planned. They develop language, creativity, spatial reasoning, empathy. They process experiences they don’t yet have words for. They rehearse for a future they’re still figuring out.

Imaginative play in particular — the kind with characters and worlds and stories — is one of the most cognitively complex things a child can do. Building an elaborate barnyard full of horses with hand-sewn saddles is not a waste of an afternoon. It is creative design, fine motor skill, narrative construction, world-building, and emotional investment all happening simultaneously.

The research on this is not ambiguous. Extended play — including imaginative, symbolic, and fantasy play — is associated with stronger executive functioning, better emotional regulation, higher creativity, and more robust social skills. The countries with the strongest educational outcomes in the world tend to be the ones that protect childhood play the longest.

We are moving in the opposite direction. And our children are paying the price.


Why Does This Hit Neurodivergent Kids Harder?

For neurodivergent children — ADHDers, autistic kids, and many others — the premature shutdown of play doesn’t just cut off something enjoyable. It cuts off one of their primary regulatory tools.

Many neurodivergent children have a stronger and longer-lasting drive toward imaginative and extended play than their neurotypical peers. This is not immaturity. This is not a developmental delay. It is a different developmental trajectory — one that is just as valid, and one that the research increasingly supports as neurologically meaningful.

For autistic kids, imaginative play — particularly the kind involving characters, scripts, and detailed world-building — often connects directly to their deepest interests and provides the predictability and control that makes the world feel manageable. The elaborate horse barnyard. The intricate Lego city. The fantasy world with its own geography and rules and inhabitants. These are not escapes from reality. They are ways of processing and understanding it.

For ADHD kids, play is frequently where their best regulation happens. The absorption of deep imaginative play — that state of total engagement where time disappears and the nervous system finally settles — is one of the few contexts where the ADHD brain gets what it needs without having to fight for it. It’s dopamine. It’s flow. It’s the brain doing exactly what it was built to do.

Taking that away — or teaching a child to be ashamed of needing it — doesn’t make the need disappear. It just takes away the tool.


How Does Homeschooling Let Them Play?

Homeschooling gives children the freedom to play without judgment. It offers the permission that traditional schooling often withholds. Without the constraints of a bell schedule and classroom dynamics, you can see your child clearly. You can see that the hours spent in the imaginary barnyard are not hours wasted. You can see the focus, creativity, problem-solving, and joy. You can see a child who is completely, entirely, perfectly herself.

And you can protect that.

The homeschool kids who came to visit my daughter didn’t need to be talked into playing. There was no awkward negotiation, no social calculation, no one checking whether this was still cool. They walked in, saw the horses, and sat down on the floor.

Just kids.

Just playing.

The way children have always played, and the way they will play for as long as we let them.


What Does “Age Appropriate” Really Mean?

The phrase age appropriate gets used a lot around play — and almost always to shut it down rather than support it.

Here is what I want you to hear clearly:

A child who wants to play is a child whose developmental needs are being expressed honestly. The age on the calendar is not the authority on what a child needs. Your child is.

An eleven-year-old who plays with horses is not behind. A fourteen-year-old who still loses themselves in imaginative worlds is not immature. A neurodivergent child who needs play longer than their neurotypical peers is not delayed.

They are exactly where they need to be.

And the most developmental harm in this picture is not the child who plays too long.

It’s the child who was told to stop before they were ready — and believed it.


Let Them Play

If your child still plays — really plays, with full imaginative investment and no self-consciousness — protect that fiercely.

If your child has already learned to hide it, to be ashamed of it, to perform an older version of themselves for the benefit of a social environment that doesn’t deserve that performance — let them know it’s safe to come back.

There is no age at which play stops being valuable.

There is no developmental stage at which imagination becomes a liability.

There is only a culture that decided, somewhere along the way, that childhood was preparation rather than experience — and a generation of children quietly grieving the play they were told they’d outgrown.

Your homeschool can be the place where that grief doesn’t have to happen.

Where the barnyard stays in the basement as long as it needs to.

Where a child never has to wish they were younger just to feel okay about who they are.

That is not a small thing.

That is everything.

“I don’t know.”

You can see that something is wrong. Their body is tense. They’ve been irritable for an hour. Something happened today — you’re not sure what — and you’re trying to connect with them, trying to help, trying to open a door.

But the door won’t open.

Not because they’re shutting you out. Not because they don’t trust you. Not because they’re being difficult or dramatic or deliberately withholding.

But because they genuinely, truly do not know.

This is alexithymia. And it’s one of the most misunderstood experiences in the neurodivergent world.


What Alexithymia Actually Is

Alexithymia comes from the Greek — roughly translated, it means “no words for feelings.” But it’s more than just struggling to find the right emotional vocabulary.

Try asking about the body instead: “Where do you feel it in your body?” or “Does anything feel tight or heavy right now?” Physical sensation is often more accessible than emotional labelling — and it’s a gentler on-ramp to the same information.

Offer words rather than asking for them. Instead of “how do you feel?”, try “I wonder if you might be feeling frustrated — does that fit?” Giving options removes the pressure of having to generate the label from scratch. Over time, this builds an internal emotional vocabulary they can eventually draw on independently.

Name what you observe, not what you assume. “I notice your shoulders are really tense” or “your face looks like something is heavy right now” gives them a reflection without requiring them to confirm or explain. It communicates that you see them without demanding they perform emotional clarity they don’t have access to.

Create space for the delayed reaction. Knowing that emotions often arrive late means you can plan for it. A calm, low-demand decompression window after difficult events — before transitions, before dinner, before anything requiring more output — gives the nervous system space to discharge before the pressure builds too high.

Connect body signals to emotions over time. When your child mentions a physical symptom — a stomachache, a headache, a feeling of heaviness — gently and curiously explore it with them. “I wonder if your body is trying to tell you something. Can you think of anything that felt hard today?” This isn’t about pushing for an answer. It’s about slowly, consistently building the connection between physical sensation and emotional experience.

Take “I don’t know” at face value. This is perhaps the most important one. When your child says they don’t know, believe them. Stop pressing. Shift to curiosity rather than interrogation. The more safe and unjudged they feel in not knowing, the more likely they are to be able to access something — eventually.

The ADHD brain is hungry. All the time.

And a hungry brain will find food wherever it can.

This is how learning works. This is how habits form. This is how motivation develops. In a neurotypical brain with a well-regulated dopamine system, this loop is healthy. It drives us toward things that are genuinely good for us — connection, achievement, creativity, physical activity.

In a dopamine-deficient brain, the loop runs differently.

Because the baseline is lower, the contrast between “dopamine deprived” and “dopamine satisfied” is more dramatic. The relief of finally finding something that hits the right frequency feels enormous — because the hunger was real. And because that contrast is so powerful, the brain learns fast. It doesn’t just remember where the dopamine came from.

It fixates on it.

This is the dopamine loop. Find the source. Get the hit. Brain learns to return. Craving builds between hits. Tolerance develops over time, requiring more of the same source to get the same relief.

Screens are the most obvious and most discussed dopamine source for kids right now — and for good reason. TikTok, YouTube, fast-paced video games — these platforms are engineered with extraordinary sophistication to deliver dopamine hits as rapidly and as frequently as possible. Rapid-cut editing, unpredictable rewards, infinite scroll — every element is designed to keep the dopamine loop running.

For any child, this is significant. For an ADHD child whose brain is already primed to latch onto reliable dopamine sources, it’s a particularly powerful pull.

But there’s a layer to this that rarely gets discussed: cognitive load.

Cognitive load is simply the amount your brain is actively managing at any given moment. Think of it like RAM on a computer — there’s only so much the brain can process at once before it starts to slow down, freeze, or crash. For neurodivergent kids — ADHD, autistic, and otherwise — that capacity is often smaller to begin with, and gets used up faster. Social navigation, sensory processing, emotional regulation, masking — all of it draws from the same limited pool. By the time many neurodivergent kids arrive at screen time, their cognitive load is already close to full.

High-stimulation content poured into an already overloaded nervous system doesn’t just deliver dopamine. It compounds the load, often pushing the nervous system past its capacity without any visible warning signs. The meltdown that happens after the screen goes off isn’t about the screen being taken away. It’s a nervous system discharging everything it couldn’t process while it was absorbing.

But underneath the impulsivity is often something more specific: the ADHD brain has learned that adrenaline and physical risk deliver a powerful, immediate dopamine hit. The racing heart, the close call, the surge of having done the dangerous thing — for a dopamine-hungry brain, this feels like exactly what it needed.

As kids get older, this can escalate. The thrill that satisfied at eight might not be enough at twelve. The stakes get higher as the tolerance builds.

This doesn’t mean every ADHD kid who takes risks is heading somewhere dangerous. But it does mean that thrill-seeking behaviour in ADHD kids deserves to be understood as a dopamine-seeking pattern — not just disciplined as a behaviour problem.

Physical activity, adventure sports, challenge-based learning, obstacle courses — these can channel the same neurological need into something that serves rather than endangers.

Attention — Including Negative Attention

This is perhaps the most important one for parents to understand, because it’s the one most likely to turn into a painful cycle.

Attention delivers dopamine.

All attention — positive and negative. The laugh from a sibling, the gasp from a parent, the reaction from a classroom, the response from anyone who was previously ignoring them — all of it hits the same neurological reward centre.

For an ADHD child who has spent a lot of time feeling invisible, unheard, or like they can’t get things right, positive attention can feel hard to access. Negative attention, on the other hand, is immediate, reliable, and guaranteed.

Act out. Get a reaction. Dopamine.

This is not manipulation. This is not calculated. This is a nervous system that found a reliable source of the thing it needs and learned to return to it. The child who is constantly pushing buttons, being the class clown, escalating conflict — they are not trying to make your life harder.

They are hungry, and they found something that feeds them.

Understanding this doesn’t mean accepting the behaviour. It means addressing the root instead of just the surface — which almost always involves finding more reliable sources of positive attention and connection so the brain doesn’t have to go looking for the negative kind.

Food

This one often flies under the radar entirely.

Eating — particularly eating highly palatable foods like sugar, salt, and fat — delivers a dopamine response. For most people, this is a background pleasure. For a dopamine-deficient brain, it can become a primary regulation strategy.

Emotional eating, compulsive snacking, the inability to stop eating something even when full — in neurodivergent kids, these patterns often have a dopamine component that has nothing to do with hunger. The food isn’t filling a physical need. It’s filling a neurological one.

This is worth knowing not to add another layer of anxiety around mealtimes — but because it’s useful context when you’re trying to understand why your child seems compelled around certain foods in a way that doesn’t respond to normal limit-setting.

Conflict and Emotional Intensity

For some ADHD kids — particularly as they get older — emotional intensity itself becomes a dopamine source.

Drama. Conflict. Intense emotional conversations. The buzz of a fight and the relief of the resolution. The heightened state of a crisis.

This can show up in friendships, in sibling relationships, and eventually in romantic relationships. It can look like a child who seems to create chaos wherever they go — who escalates situations that didn’t need escalating, who can’t seem to let things settle.

Because the goal was never to deprive a hungry brain. The goal is to make sure it has access to nourishing sources of dopamine — not just the fast food version.

Movement. Creative work. Music. Deep interest. Real connection. Challenge and mastery. These all deliver dopamine at a rate and quality that sustains rather than depletes.

When those are available and accessible, the pull toward the more problematic sources loosens — not because the brain has been disciplined into submission, but because it’s no longer running on empty.

None of it is yours either.

An ADHD brain seeking dopamine is doing exactly what a survival-oriented nervous system is supposed to do. The fact that it finds the path of least resistance — screens, conflict, risk, food, negative attention — is not a moral failure. It’s a predictable outcome of a brain trying to meet a real need with whatever tools are available.

Your job isn’t to make them feel bad for needing what they need.

Your job is to help them find better ways to get it.

That’s what your child is doing when they cycle through every screen, every toy, every activity in the house and still can’t settle.

They’re not being difficult.

They’re searching.


What It Feels Like From the Inside

This is the part that most parents never get to hear — because most kids don’t have the language for it yet.

ADHDers who’ve learned to describe it talk about a kind of vibrating, itchy feeling. An unbearable internal restlessness that takes enormous mental energy to sit with. Sometimes it’s emotional — a low-grade agitation that makes everything feel slightly wrong. Instead of earn the reward, it becomes: here’s the reward — now let’s do the thing.

You give the dopamine hit first.

Before the math lesson, your child gets 20 minutes of free play. Before they tackle a writing task, they watch one episode of their favourite show. Before a difficult afternoon, you go outside together first.

This sounds counterintuitive. It might even feel like giving in.

But what you’re actually doing is filling the tank.

When an ADHD brain is already regulated, stimulated, and satisfied, shifting into a less-preferred task becomes genuinely possible in a way it simply wasn’t before. You’ve given their nervous system what it needed to have capacity. Now there’s something left in the tank to spend on the hard thing.

It’s not a reward for compliance. It’s regulation before demand.

In practice, it looks like this:

Instead of “Finish your reading and then you can play outside,” try “Let’s go outside for a bit first — get some fresh air and move your body — and then we’ll come in and do reading together.”

Instead of “No screens until your work is done,” try “You’ve got 15 minutes of free time right now. When the timer goes, we’ll get started.”

You’re not removing accountability. You’re removing the barrier that was making starting impossible in the first place.

Rewarding Deadlines

A rewarding deadline pairs the completion of a task with something immediate, specific, and meaningful — not a vague promise somewhere in the future, but a concrete plan the child can see and feel coming.

The key difference between a rewarding deadline and a traditional deadline is what’s driving the urgency.

Traditional deadlines work through pressure and consequences. Get this done, or else. For an ADHD nervous system that’s already struggling to regulate, adding threat to the equation usually makes things worse. Cortisol spikes. Anxiety takes over. And suddenly your child can’t think clearly enough to do the thing you needed them to do.

A rewarding deadline does the opposite. It creates urgency — one of the five core ADHD motivators — while tying that urgency to something the child wants, rather than something they fear.

In practice:

Instead of “You need to finish this by noon,” try “If we finish school by noon, we can go to the park right after.”

The difference sounds small. The neurological impact is not.
