You’re being dramatic. It’s just a tag. Nobody else is bothered by the noise. Just eat it, you can’t even taste the texture.
But the child is not being dramatic. Their nervous system is reporting genuine distress. The experience of that sensory input is, for them, exactly as overwhelming as they’re communicating.

The nervous system seeks stimulation to reach a functional state, often through sensory-seeking behaviors. Understanding this helps tailor support.
This child doesn’t notice they’re cold until they’re shaking. Doesn’t register hunger until they’re past the point of functioning. Doesn’t feel pain the way other children do — which sounds useful until you realise it means injuries go unreported and unnoticed. Doesn’t pick up on social cues delivered through tone of voice or facial expression because those subtle signals don’t land with enough weight to register.
And critically — the hyposensitive nervous system is hungry. Not for food. For input.
When the nervous system is under-registering, it seeks the stimulation it needs to reach a functional state of arousal and attention. This seeking is not random or wilful. It is the nervous system doing exactly what it is supposed to do — trying to regulate itself.
Sensory Seeking: The Nervous System Looking for What It Needs
Sensory seeking looks like a lot of things. Some of them are easy to understand. Some of them are confusing or concerning until you have the framework.
Movement. Spinning, rocking, jumping, crashing into things, hanging upside down, never sitting still. The vestibular system — responsible for balance and spatial orientation — is under-registering, and movement is how the nervous system wakes it up. The child who can’t stop spinning is not being disruptive. They are regulating.
Deep pressure. Craving tight hugs, hiding under heavy blankets, wedging themselves into small spaces, wearing tight clothing, pressing their body against furniture. The proprioceptive system needs strong input to locate the body in space and produce a calming effect. Weighted blankets work for this reason — they’re not a gimmick. They’re deep pressure in a socially acceptable, portable form.
Sound. Playing music loudly, making repetitive noises, humming, tapping, creating constant sound in the environment. An auditory system that under-registers needs more input to stay alert. The child who seems to need constant noise isn’t being inconsiderate. They’re self-medicating with sound.
Touch. Touching everything, chewing on sleeves or collars or pencils, seeking physical contact, craving rough textures. The tactile system needs more input than it’s getting, and the seeking is the attempt to provide it.
Visual input. Watching spinning or flashing things, seeking out movement and light, fixating on patterns or screens. The visual system is under-responsive and is drawn toward the input that helps it regulate.
All of these behaviors serve the same fundamental purpose: helping the brain reach the level of arousal it needs to function, focus, and feel okay. They are not bad habits. They are not attention-seeking. They are not behaviors to be eliminated. They are self-regulation strategies — often remarkably effective ones — that the nervous system developed because it needed them.
The Child Who Is Both
Here is where it gets complicated — and where a lot of parents find themselves genuinely confused.
Many neurodivergent children are not purely hypersensitive or purely hyposensitive. They are both, in different sensory channels, sometimes at the same time.
The child who cannot tolerate the tag in their shirt — hypersensitive to tactile input — may also crave spinning and crashing — hyposensitive in their vestibular system. The child who is overwhelmed by the noise of the cafeteria may also constantly hum to themselves. The child who can’t eat food with mixed textures may chew on their sleeve all day.

Understanding your child’s sensory profile — which channels are over-responsive, which are under-responsive, and what they naturally seek — is one of the most practical things you can do to make daily life and learning more manageable.
Reduce unnecessary sensory load. If your child is hypersensitive to certain inputs, removing them where possible isn’t accommodating bad behaviour. It’s reducing friction so their nervous system has enough capacity left for the things that matter. Tagless clothing. Noise-cancelling headphones. Consistent, predictable environments. Dim lighting options. These aren’t indulgences. They’re tools.
Build sensory seeking into the routine. If your child needs movement to regulate, give them movement — intentionally, before you need them to focus, not as a reward after. A trampoline break before lessons. A weighted lap pad during reading. A fidget tool at the work table. When the nervous system gets what it needs, it has capacity left for learning.
Read the sensory behavior, don’t just manage it. When your child is spinning, or chewing, or covering their ears, or refusing to enter a room — ask what their nervous system is telling them. What is too much right now? What does it need? The behavior is communication. Treating it as information rather than defiance changes everything about how you respond.
