Don’t Let School Convince You You’re Not Smart

 

My daughter and I spent several hours tonight studying for her math test tomorrow.

She’s neurodivergent. She struggles in math and English because of dyslexia and dyscalculia. There were a lot of tears. And at one point she said something that broke my heart:

“I wish I could just be as smart as everyone else.”

?

So I told her the truth.

Sweetie, everyone has hard things and easy things. Everyone.

This is your hard thing. Reading and numbers are harder for you. They just are. But that doesn’t mean you aren’t smart.

Here’s what no one tells you about school:

School is centered around reading and numbers.

Independent reading is how one adult manages thirty kids in a classroom. Tests are how large groups are measured quickly. The whole structure depends on literacy and numerical processing.

So if reading and numbers are your hard things, school will feel hard.

That doesn’t mean you’re not smart.

It means the system is built around your area of challenge.

And here’s another truth about school:

School doesn’t reward effort. It rewards output.

If math comes easily to your friend and she spends 20 relaxed minutes on a worksheet and earns a 90%, and you spend 60 grueling minutes and earn a 50% — who worked harder?

You did.

But school doesn’t measure how hard you worked.

It measures how many answers were correct.

Now imagine something different.

If school were centered around creativity…

or engineering-thinking…

or musical instinct…

or empathy and thoughtfulness…

or responsibility and trustworthiness…

You would be at the top of the class.

You would be absolutely crushing it.

But school doesn’t prioritize those traits.

But guess what? The real world does.

The real world cares that you show up on time.

That you think outside the box.

That you treat people with kindness.

That you keep going when things are hard.

The real world doesn’t care if you use a calculator to figure out a tip.

It doesn’t care if you prefer audiobooks over printed pages.

It doesn’t care how quickly you finish a worksheet.

The most powerful skill you’ll carry into adulthood isn’t mental math.

It’s perseverance.

It’s knowing how to work hard at something that doesn’t come easily.

So please — don’t let school convince you that you’re not smart just because it has a narrow definition of what counts.

Don’t let it shrink how you see yourself.

Don’t let it break your spirit.

This has been on my mind today…

I talk to so many homeschooling parents who have had this moment:

They run a school-based diagnostic test to see if their child is “on grade level”.

They see a score they weren’t expecting.

And suddenly, their confidence collapses.

“I think my kids have fallen behind.”

“I feel like I’ve failed them.”

“Did homeschooling make them lose skills?”

Let me say this clearly, as both a former teacher and a homeschooling mom:

School-based testing does not measure your child’s intelligence.

And it absolutely does not measure the value of your homeschool.

Most of these assessments — especially the popular ones families use to “check grade level” — were designed for traditional classrooms. They measure a very specific thing: a child’s ability to memorize and recall the exact skills schools have decided are important, in the exact format they expect.

That’s it.

They usually test math and language.

They don’t test problem-solving.

They don’t test creativity.

They don’t test if your child is happier, more confident, or less anxious than they were in school.

They don’t test emotional regulation skills.

They don’t test adaptability, curiosity, persistence, or resilience.

And yet those are the very skills that matter most once school is over.

Here’s something else most parents don’t realize:

The human brain only retains information for two reasons.

  1. Intrinsic interest — the learner genuinely cares about the topic.
  2. Perceived usefulness — the learner understands why this information matters in their real life.

Everything else? The brain offloads.

This is why retention in public school is so low. It’s why every fall, teachers spend weeks “reviewing” material kids supposedly learned the year before — and most students swear they were never taught it. They were. Their brains just didn’t keep it.

We adults are no different.

If most of us took a grade 7 math test today, we’d struggle — unless we’re naturally “math people” (intrinsic interest) or use it regularly in our work (perceived usefulness). That doesn’t make us less intelligent than a seventh grader. It just means we’ve let go of information we don’t need.

Kids do the same thing.

So when a homeschool parent sees a test score and panics, what they’re often seeing isn’t “lost intelligence.”

They’re seeing a mismatch between how the brain actually learns and how schools measure learning.

Homeschooling offers something radically different — and far more valuable. It teaches kids how to learn. How to ask questions. How to find information when they need it. How to notice what interests them and pursue it deeply. How to persist through challenges without shame.

Those skills don’t show up on standardized diagnostics.

But they show up everywhere else in life.

Now, if it’s important to you that your child aligns closely with public school benchmarks, that’s okay. Homeschooling isn’t one thing — it’s yours to shape. You can absolutely use test results as information, identify gaps, and choose to work on specific skills.

What I don’t want you to do is let those numbers define your child — or yourself.

Your kids are not checkboxes.

Your homeschool is not a failure because it doesn’t mirror school.

And you are not doing this wrong because your child’s brain didn’t perform on demand for a system you intentionally stepped away from.

Please take school-based tests for what they are: limited tools, not verdicts.

You are building something bigger than scores.

Something more human.

And that matters far more than any diagnostic ever will.

My daughter’s friend, who has always been in public school, told her recently that she wished she could still play with toys. My daughter, without hesitation, said, “So play with toys then! Who cares? Do what you want!” But her friend shook her head. She said no—she was too old for toys, and if other kids found out, they’d make fun of her.

They’re 13 years old. And here’s the thing: 13 is still a child. If a child that age still wants to play, that isn’t immaturity—it’s development happening at the pace it’s meant to. Play and imagination are not only normal, they’re scientifically proven to be deeply beneficial for kids’ brains. Yet her friend felt she couldn’t do it, because the social culture around her said she was “too old.”

And it wasn’t just about toys. She also shared that at her school, there’s pressure to start thinking about crushes, even dating. Imagine that—kids who still long to play with toys being told that what’s “normal” is pairing off romantically. That’s not freedom. That’s conformity.

People often ask homeschool families about socialization. “Aren’t you worried your kids won’t know how to socialize?” But what’s rarely asked is the harder question: what exactly are kids being socialized into at school? Too often, it’s a kind of toxic conformity that shames kids for being developmentally right where they are.

Our homeschoolers aren’t “immature.” They’re maturing at their natural pace. They’re free to linger in play, imagination, and curiosity without shame. And when the time comes, they’ll step naturally into new stages of life—without being rushed there before they’re ready.

One of the greatest gifts of homeschooling is that we get to protect childhood. We get to give our kids the time and space to grow up without unnecessary pressure. And sometimes, that looks like a 13-year-old proudly playing with toys, because she’s still a kid—and that’s exactly what she should be.

This has been on my mind today…

The weight of comparison. It sneaks in quietly. A friend tells you what their child is learning in school. A neighbor asks about your homeschool “schedule.” You catch a glimpse of someone’s color-coded curriculum plan on Instagram. Suddenly your confidence starts to unravel.

I remember this feeling most clearly when my oldest was around eight or nine. We were deep into homeschooling, but I was constantly looking over my shoulder at what public school kids were doing. Were we covering the same content? Were we behind? Was I doing enough?

It became exhausting. I was trying to replicate school at home—not because it worked for us, but because I thought that’s what “real” education looked like.

Here’s the truth I had to learn the hard way: homeschool doesn’t need to imitate public school to be valid. In fact, the whole point is that it doesn’t.

I kept coming back to a simple question. If I can’t remember what I learned in third grade, why was I putting so much pressure on myself to make sure my child retained every single concept in the third grade curriculum? I realized I was clinging to a system I didn’t even believe in—one I had left behind for a reason.

When kids are in school, they’re taught for a set number of days, then tested. If they get a 60%, that means they missed 40%—and the class moves on. No one loops back. No one stops the train. That’s a gap. A big one. But it’s accepted.

In our homeschool, if my child gets sick or we need to pause for emotional rest, schoolwork pauses. School doesn’t go on without them on sick days, it waits for them. We don’t pretend 60% is good enough. The beauty of this lifestyle is that learning pauses with the child and picks up again when they’re ready.

That alone makes a massive difference.

And the truth is, we all have learning gaps. Adults included. Because humans only retain what they find meaningful. You can make a child memorize facts for a test, but they’ll likely forget most of it after. If something isn’t relevant to their lives, it doesn’t stick. So whether you never cover it, or they forget it, the result is the same.

That realization gave me freedom.

I stopped obsessing over whether we had checked every box. I started asking better questions: Was my child curious today? Did we connect? Did they ask questions that mattered to them? Those were my new benchmarks.

And wouldn’t you know—it made everything easier. They were learning more, not less. And I was enjoying it more, too.

So if you’re caught in that loop of comparison, wondering if your homeschool is “real” enough, let me gently offer this: your homeschool is enough because it’s yours. Because it fits your child. Because it’s rooted in love, flexibility, and intention.

That’s not falling behind. That’s choosing to lead.

When I think back on our homeschool journey — and honestly, even my time as a classroom teacher — one thing that always struck me was how often we tried to fix learning by changing the curriculum.

I’ve been watching the news about Ontario’s decision to pause its major curriculum reforms, especially the overhaul to kindergarten, and I’ll be honest — it felt familiar. Not because change is bad, but because too often, we mistake activity for progress.

As someone who’s both taught in public school and built curriculum from the ground up here at Schoolio, I’ve seen how these sweeping changes tend to go. New documents, new standards, new language — but very little impact on what really matters to kids and teachers. A few years later, we do it all over again.

It’s not reform. It’s spinning.

Somewhere along the way, we started treating education like a business — always marketing, rebranding, looking for the next system-wide breakthrough. But kids aren’t products. And learning isn’t a marketing strategy.

The truth is, what drives real learning is rarely found in a government PDF. Students thrive when their curiosity is sparked. When their teacher has the freedom and energy to explore a topic from a new angle. When lessons connect to the real world — to questions they actually ask.

But most curriculum overhauls don’t get at any of that. They shuffle standards. They update timelines. They insert buzzwords. But they rarely ignite joy — in students or teachers.

If you’ve ever sat at the kitchen table with your child, trying to make sense of a lesson that feels totally disconnected from real life, you know exactly what I mean. That glazed look. The frustration. The deep feeling of “why are we even doing this?”

That’s not a learning problem. That’s a relevance problem.

What we need isn’t a brand new curriculum every few years. What we need is a mindset shift.

Instead of building everything from the top down, what if we started from the ground up? What if we trusted teachers to lead the way, using their experience and insight to shape lessons that actually land? What if we listened — really listened — to the kids?

When we think about homeschooling, we usually focus on the moment of decision — the bold step to withdraw your child from public school. But what no one really prepares you for is what comes next. The emotional rollercoaster. The fear. The freedom. The judgement. And sometimes, the deep, healing relief.

I remember sitting across the table from a group of school officials — a counselor, a legal advisor, the principal. All of them there with one clear message. They believed my daughter needed ADHD medication, and they were pushing hard. Not because we had explored every alternative. Not because she was in danger. But because the system didn’t know what else to do.

I was scared. I felt cornered. As a parent, I questioned everything in that moment — am I wrong? Am I risking her future? What happens if I say no?

But I did say no. I refused to medicate my daughter just to make her more “school ready.” I wanted her to grow up understanding her own mind and body. I wanted her to make choices as an adult with full awareness of the consequences — not be forced into something because a system didn’t have the tools to support her.

That moment was a turning point. It made me realize how many families are pushed toward homeschooling not because they planned to, but because they’re trying to protect their child from a system that won’t bend. And once they do take the leap, here’s what they often discover — the things no one tells you.

1. You’ll grieve what you thought school was supposed to be.

Even when school has been hard or harmful, there’s still a sense of loss. You grieve the routine, the friendships, the path you thought your child would follow. That’s normal. You’re not just changing schools — you’re changing your vision of the future. And that takes time.

2. Your child might decompress in ways you didn’t expect.

When kids leave a stressful school environment, they don’t always bounce back right away. Some become withdrawn. Others act out. Some sleep for days or resist any structure. This isn’t failure. It’s healing. You’ve given them space to feel safe — and that space will eventually be filled with curiosity and confidence again.

3. People will question your decision — sometimes harshly.

Friends, family, even strangers might ask, “Are you sure this is a good idea?” or “But what about socialization?” These questions sting, especially when you’re still figuring things out. But over time, you’ll grow more confident in your path — and your results will speak louder than any opinion.

4. You’ll start to see your child clearly — and that changes everything.

One of the most surprising and beautiful parts of homeschooling is how it reconnects you with your child. You notice their quirks, their strengths, their rhythms. You stop measuring them against someone else’s expectations. And you finally see them — not as a student to fix, but as a whole person with so much potential.


I’ve spoken to hundreds of families now who have made this jump. Some were pushed by crisis. Others chose it proactively. But every one of them, at some point, went through this quiet storm of feelings after leaving the public school system.

How I Learned to Stop Comparing My Homeschool to Public School

When I think back on our homeschool journey, there’s one chapter I almost didn’t want to admit. It was the year Grace still couldn’t read.

She was nine. Nine years old, and reading hadn’t clicked. Every night, after she went to bed, I would lie awake spiraling. I thought I had ruined her or that I was the problem. Reading the benchmarks only made it worse. Public school laid out exactly what was expected by first grade. Yet there I was, years later, feeling like I had broken something in her by trying to do it all differently.

I tried everything. From phonics programs to full curriculum bundles, I spent money we didn’t really have on tools that promised results. Our printer groaned under the weight of all the worksheets. There were days I begged, bribed, and cried. And she hated all of it.

One day, after another tense battle over a workbook, Grace looked at me and said, “I hate reading. I hate books.”

It broke me.

I gave up. I stopped pushing. Honestly, I stopped trying. I said to myself, fine. She’ll be illiterate. We’ll figure it out later. But I couldn’t keep doing that to either of us.

A few months later, something unexpected happened. We downloaded a video game called Stardew Valley. It’s slow-paced, gentle, and deeply story-driven — but it has no spoken dialogue. Everything is written in captions. At first, she’d call me from the other room every few minutes to read something. I’d drop what I was doing and go help. Over and over.

Then, one day, the requests stopped. I realized she wasn’t calling anymore — she was reading it herself.

Within three weeks of playing that game daily, something had clicked. I watched my daughter — the one I thought I had failed — read fluently, joyfully, independently. And I cried again, but this time for a different reason.

It wasn’t that she couldn’t learn. It was that she didn’t learn the way I was taught to expect. She needed time, space, and motivation that was meaningful to her. She needed me to stop comparing her to arbitrary timelines built for someone else’s classroom.

Homeschooling gave her that chance.

Now, when I hear a parent panic because their kid isn’t “on grade level,” I get it. I really do. But I also want to gently offer: maybe the problem isn’t your child or your teaching. Maybe it’s the invisible comparison you’ve been carrying — the one that says there’s only one right way to learn, and it happens in a public school classroom, on someone else’s clock.

Grace taught me that’s not true. Learning is not linear. It’s not uniform. It’s not a race. Sometimes, letting go is the most loving, brave thing you can do — for both of you.

Is Homeschooling Right for You and Your Child?

If you are a parent considering homeschooling due to COVID-19, you are not alone. Homeschooling is seeing a global surge; 10% growth in 2020, compared to 6% before Covid.

Homeschooling may not be the right choice for all families, so how can you find out if it’s the right fit for yours?

If you’re pondering with the options of homeschooling your children, or putting them back in school. There are many factors you should examine first, to ensure it will be helpful for both your children and you.

So, let’s start with the benefits.

Choice of Educational Curriculum. Probably the most significant benefit of homeschooling is the ability to choose your child’s curriculum. You decide what your child studies, when they study, and for how long. No one knows your child better than you. And no one cares about your child’s progress more than you do. If you want to spend more time studying math, you can do so. If history is of particular importance to your child, you can include it in your child’s curriculum. Homeschooling also gives children the opportunity to spend more time focusing their studies on areas of interest, such as art or science.

Scheduling Freedom. Just like all forms of education, homeschooling can be demanding of your time. But in other way,  it can be a significant relief to a very busy out of home schedule. Homeschool families are not constrained by the public school system’s daily, weekly, and monthly schedules. Families may choose to set up a homeschooling routine that no longer orbits around the school’s calendar and school hours.

Increased emotional and physical safety. These days bullying is prevalent in most public schools. While not every child is bullied, it happens to quite a few – and the result can be devastating. It’s not only emotionally damaging, but it makes learning and receiving a good education close to impossible for some kids. Homeschooling avoids all of these potentially harmful influences. Other negative consequences that homeschooling can sometimes avoids includes: peer pressure, competition and poor self-esteem issues. Homeschooled children also don’t have to worry about the “fitting in” aspect that plagues just about every child in the public school system.

Increased productivity. Public schools have a scarcity of teachers. Growing class sizes means students receive less one-on-one attention. Kids attending public schools often have a ton of homework – because the classroom setting isn’t conducive to getting a lot accomplished in a day. Homeschooled kids rarely have “after school” tasks, as the assignments are completed while class is in session.

Better Sleep. Sometimes sleeping in, just a little bit, is just what you need. Early morning sleep can be beneficial, especially for kids that aren’t morning people. Homeschooling starts when the child naturally wakes up fresh and ready to learn.

What about the negative side of Homeschooling?

Heightened stress. Homeschooling your children can be stressful at times. Homeschooling takes a lot of time and effort from you as the parent. Day in and day out, lessons have to be prepared and taught. Parents who homeschool have to deal with many of the same issues as teachers do. They must also provide their children with hands-on learning experiences and activities. Homeschooling is not spent at the kitchen table with textbooks and worksheets – as many people envision.

It can be costly. Homeschooling isn’t cheap, primarily if you’re used to being in a two-income household. Almost all homeschooling homes are one-income families. Living off of one income is a result of one parent usually assuming the role of teacher for their children. This can be a big sacrifice if money is tight – but most homeschooling families find the sacrifice well worth it because of the many benefits of having their children learning in such a positive environment. There is also the cost of books and supplies to consider. As homeschooling is not subsidized by taxpayers dollars – as public schooling is – parents must cover all costs associated with homeschooling. (some states and provinces do offer some funding)

Heightened scrutiny. Even though there are more homeschoolers today than ever before, homeschooling faces increasing scrutiny, criticism and negative pressure from government and mainstream educational organizations. Some critics can’t handle seeing parents do a better job educating their children than the “highly” trained professionals in the public education system.

To summarize, the choice is yours. Both homeschooling and public education have their pros and cons. At Schoolio, we believe parents should choose the best method that empowers their child to love learning – stay curious and find passion in becoming a lifelong learner.

3 Things You Need To Remember Before Starting Grade 1

Congratulations! Your child has made it to grade 1! I have three children, grades one, three and four. With each one of my children, I always felt like grade one was a huge milestone. You’ve made it through JK and SK and you’re now on a more organized track of learning. With that said, it can still feel extremely overwhelming. I remember the night before my oldest started first grade, I was a wreck!  I kept questioning myself and worrying that maybe I wasn’t doing the right thing. I wondered if I should just register her for school. I wondered if homeschooling was really the best choice. I worried that I wasn’t using curriculum that stood up to Grade 1 Ontario Curriculum.  

But then I remembered the many school interviews we had, and the tug in my gut that this just wasn’t right for her. I remembered that she learns at a much different pace than other children. I remembered that she needed that one on one attention that I knew I could give her, and the public-school system couldn’t. Homeschooling is such a journey, and honestly some days are tough. But each day that you put the effort in to teach your child, is a beautiful day. 

Here are 3 things you need to remember when starting your Grade 1 Homeschool Journey: 

  1. Stop pressuring yourself. Just the fact that you care enough about your child’s education to take on homeschool and sign up for Schoolio, is enough reason to believe in yourself. And remember that the decisions that you are making for your child’s education, are actually really great decisions. Second guessing yourself will only lead to anxiety, and that’s one thing you don’t need right now. 
  2. Every child learns at their own pace. It’s hard when you’re trying to go over concepts like reading, or math. And your child is just not putting effort into learning. Some days, your child may just need a small break. Change the scene. Take them out for a walk, get some fresh air. Play a game. Just like you probably get a little agitated when you’ve been working for a while, they also need patience, and a moment to refresh their mind. You don’t have to accomplish everything in the early hours of the morning. Your schedule is yours. If you need to change it up some days, then do it. 
  3. Be kind to yourself. It’s so easy to allow ‘mom guilt’ to sink in. To feel like ‘I’ve neglected the house work.’ ‘I need to spend more time reading with my child.’ ‘My kid watched too much tv today.’ Mom guilt is a bridge to ruin. Don’t go that way. Every day that you choose to wake up and homeschool, is a day that you rocked being a mom! You are seriously so amazing! So please, be nice to yourself and remember you are doing a stellar job!
