Inspire creativity and critical thinking with Writing Fiction & Book Reviews, a Schoolio Writing Skills unit that guides students through the joyful process of crafting their own story and analyzing one they’ve read. This two-part unit builds confidence in both imaginative and opinion-based writing, helping young learners understand structure, voice, and purpose.

In the first half, students create and illustrate a simple fiction story using graphic organizers, drawing prompts, and supported writing pages. In the second half, they’ll select a favorite book and write a review that includes summary, personal opinion, and a star rating—just like a real book critic!

Students will:

• Brainstorm and write their own fiction story with a beginning, middle, and end 
• Learn about character, setting, and story structure 
• Use visual prompts and outline pages to support story creation 
• Summarize and critique a favorite book in their own words 
• Learn to express and support opinions in a simple, clear format 
• Practice editing and presenting their finished work 

This unit includes optional writing prompts, tracing support, and lots of encouragement for young writers. It’s designed to foster confidence and creativity while making writing fun and accessible.

Recommended for ages 6–8 | Approximately 4 weeks of instruction depending on your chosen pacing
