Description
Grade 8 Writing Skills: Expository and Argumentative Writing
Build strong academic writing skills with Expository and Argumentative Writing, a two-part Schoolio unit that equips students to write clearly, persuasively, and with evidence. Over four weeks, learners explore how to present facts, explain processes, and craft a thesis-based argument with structure and support.
Students will:
- Write a newspaper-style expository article about refugees during the Vietnam War, using information from Inside Out & Back Again and/or outside research
- Use the inverted pyramid structure to organize news writing with clarity and depth
- Learn and apply the five types of expository writing: description, sequence, compare and contrast, cause and effect, and problem/solution
- Plan and write an argumentative essay on the same topic, developing a thesis, supporting it with evidence, and acknowledging opposing viewpoints
- Use research worksheets, outlines, and editing strategies to polish their final writing pieces
- Build critical thinking through multiple drafting, peer feedback, and revision
Each week includes consistent steps: topic introduction, structured planning, writing sessions, and final editing. Optional creative prompts add opportunities for personal expression throughout the unit.
Recommended for ages 13–15 | Approximately 4 weeks of instruction depending on your chosen pacing
