Grade 6 Writing Skills: Poetry and Book Reviews
Develop creative expression and critical thinking with Poetry and Book Reviews, a two-part Schoolio writing unit. Over four weeks, students will experiment with multiple poetry forms, including allegory, haiku, cinquain, and diamante, and then shift to analyzing literature through a structured book review.
Students will:
Write four different styles of poems: allegory, haiku, cinquain, and diamante
Explore poetic devices such as imagery, figurative language, and symbolism
Analyze classic poetry samples and create their own original pieces
Learn to plan, structure, and write a full book review based on a novel of their choice
Summarize plot, setting, and characters, and evaluate the book with a supported opinion
Edit and polish their writing to produce a final collection of poems and a completed book report
Each week follows a structured writing schedule: brainstorming, writing, editing, and final presentation, supported by graphic organizers and sample texts.
Recommended for ages 11–13 | Approximately 4 weeks of instruction depending on your chosen pacing
