Grade 7 Writing Skills: Literary Devices and Poetry
Develop expressive, impactful writing through Literary Devices and Poetry, a two-part Schoolio unit. Over four weeks, students explore poetic forms and figurative language, learning how to use literary devices to express emotion, rhythm, and theme with creativity and precision.
Students will:
Identify and apply key literary devices including metaphor, simile, personification, alliteration, onomatopoeia, rhyme, and repetition
Study poetry samples and analyze rhyme schemes, structure, and sound patterns
Practice figurative language through targeted writing activities and worksheets
Write an original “I AM” poem using metaphor and layered literary devices
Use brainstorming sheets and editing checklists to refine and finalize their poem
Reflect on their own identity, feelings, and personal expression through poetry
Each week includes structured writing steps—brainstorming, drafting, editing, and presentation—supported by graphic organizers, models, and reflection prompts.
Recommended for ages 12–14 | Approximately 4 weeks of instruction depending on your chosen pacing
