Grade 8 Writing Skills: Literary Devices and Poetry
Deepen expressive writing and literary analysis with Literary Devices and Poetry, a two-part Schoolio unit focused on building strong figurative language skills and crafting original poetry. Over four weeks, students explore key poetic devices, analyze published poems, and write their own using structure, sound, and symbolism.
Students will:
- Learn and practice seven key literary devices: metaphor, simile, personification, alliteration, onomatopoeia, repetition, and rhyme
- Analyze classic poems such as “A Poison Tree” by William Blake, “Hope is the thing with feathers” by Emily Dickinson, and “The Rose Family” by Robert Frost
- Explore rhythm, rhyme scheme, tone, and theme through guided exercises
- Brainstorm and write a personal “Sound Poem” inspired by a meaningful sound from childhood
- Use figurative language intentionally to enhance meaning, emotion, and imagery in poetry
- Edit and produce a final draft with optional illustration or performance
Each week includes structured lessons, practice worksheets, and creative assignments designed to support literary growth and poetic confidence.
