Grade 6 Writing Skills: Letters and News Articles
In this two-part writing unit, Letters and News Articles teaches students how to express themselves clearly in both personal and professional contexts. Students will write informal letters and emails, then shift to researching and reporting factual events in news article format.
Students will:
Learn the parts of an informal letter, including greeting, body, sign-off, and signature
Practice writing an informal letter to a friend or family member
Explore how to write both informal and formal emails, with appropriate tone and structure
Understand how news articles are organized and how to research credible information
Write a factual, unbiased news article that answers the 5Ws and How
Practice editing and revising their writing for clarity, tone, and grammar
Each week includes structured steps: brainstorming, writing, editing, and presenting. The unit also includes sample texts and helpful organizers to support independent learning.
Recommended for ages 11–13 | Approximately 4 weeks of instruction depending on your chosen pacing
