Grade 7 Writing Skills: Expository Paragraphs and Essay Writing
Develop academic writing skills with Expository Paragraphs and Essay Writing, a two-part Schoolio writing unit. Students begin with writing clear, factual newspaper-style articles and progress into developing multi-paragraph autobiographical essays, gaining confidence with organization, transitions, and formal tone.
Students will:
- Explore five types of expository writing: description, process, compare/contrast, cause/effect, and problem/solution
- Learn how to write a newspaper article using the 5Ws and how to structure information with an inverted pyramid
- Use interviews, research, and planning organizers to develop ideas
- Build paragraphs with clear topic sentences, elaboration, transitions, and concluding statements
- Write an autobiographical essay based on three personal character traits
- Develop introductions, conclusions, and thesis statements for structured essay writing
- Practice proofreading and editing to finalize a polished written product
Each week includes guided instruction, planners, graphic organizers, and writing checklists to build skills gradually and support independent work.
