Course Description:

Schoolio Holiday mini units are designed as unit studies- where all subject areas are covered under the same theme. Your student learner will investigate the topic through social studies, science, language arts, mathematics, and art. Lessons include differentiated learning for student learners in different grades and at varied levels. For example, mathematics questions will start at a Kinder level and get progressively more difficult. Please choose the questions and activities throughout the unit that best match your student learners’ working level. Your student learner will engage in tactile and concrete learning activities, often including games, outdoor activities, and media add-ons. The curriculum supports the development of core subject area skills. Mini units include all subject areas and focus on fun activities themed around the holiday or seasonal topic. These thematic unit studies are a great way to increase student engagement at special times of the year, while improving and practicing skills, and learning more about the origins and purpose of traditional holidays.

Each holiday studied includes: an overview of the meanings and origins of the holiday, when it is observed or celebrated, typical customs, dress, food, or activities that are included in the celebration, and a special focus on two important items or symbols from the holiday. Your student learner will also investigate each celebration with a media recommendation, book recommendation, an activity, a recipe, and an art project. Mapping and geography skills are also developed through the use of provided maps and exercises.
