We just finished the ancient civilizations one and my kids weren’t interested in the Mayans so we did the basics in the book and that’s all, gave them an overview of the culture, then they were super interested in Ancient Rome so we stopped there and did a bunch of additional learning, added a documentary and some library books etc. Same thing again with ancient Inuit they weren’t digging but we still covered the basics in the book so they have the foundations and then ancient Egypt they were into so we spent longer there. “It really depends on the child and your learning objectives! The content covers all the key concepts that should be covered for that year, but if you find a subject area your child enjoys, you can add lots in that area (field trips, books, documentaries, experiments, etc.) or if they are really struggling with a concept you may want to slow down and add in baking or legos or other strategies to solidify the concept. The idea behind the program is that it covers all your basics, and leaves you the freedom to explore and extend in whichever other ways suit your family. “My daughter fell between the cracks at school and was at a kindergarten level in grade 2. I was so overwhelmed and stressed and our school board did nothing. She has mild cerebral palsy and Dyspraxia so was just completely written off. She is finishing grade 4 next week and is academically supposed to be in grade 4! She caught up due to Schoolio. The only thing she struggles with is language arts subjects due to the dyspraxia so is behind there but that’s it. It has been the best thing I could have done for her and I’m very thankful for this program. “I am using Schoolio now for my daughter (grade 7-8 level) to do math, which she hates and has a previous designation of dyscalculia. We tried a bunch of other things and they didn’t work but Schoolio looks like it will. The very short lessons plus practice online are working for her because it’s so short that it can keep her attention. She is doing a grade 8 science class with an online school and asked me yesterday if Schoolio did science (she was trying to avoid an assignment?). I like that I can easily see how she is doing through the parent account. I will say that my only critique of Schoolio is that it is mostly content delivery via short videos, rather than projects or inquiry-based learning activities. But, I think they are moving in the direction of having more project-based learning options for parents. I also emailed them with feedback and heard back from their CEO. I was impressed.”

That isn’t to say that he doesn’t need redirected at times, but compared to paper and pencil work, the struggle to complete tasks has almost been eliminated. Kids are funny….what works for one isn’t going to work for others. As parents, especially homeschooling parents, we need to find what works best for our kiddos and go from there…but I don’t think it’s fair to throw a blanket statement that it won’t work for ADHD kids, because my experience is different.
