Writing Comics & News Articles – A Schoolio Writing Skills Unit
Spark creativity and real-world awareness with Writing Comics & News Articles, a Schoolio Writing Skills unit that explores two very different—but equally exciting—forms of writing. In the first half of this 4-week unit, students bring characters and stories to life in comic strip form. Then, they shift to the role of journalist, learning how to report real events with structure, objectivity, and detail.
This unit encourages both imaginative expression and informational writing, helping students understand voice, audience, and format through meaningful practice.
Students will:
- Plan and write an original comic strip using character, setting, plot, and dialogue
- Use visual storytelling to enhance written ideas
- Learn the structure and tone of a news article: headline, lead, facts, and conclusion
- Practice distinguishing between fact and opinion
- Edit and present finished work with clarity and pride
Recommended for ages 8–10 | Approximately 4 weeks of instruction depending on your chosen pacing
