Poetry Study – Schoolio Grade 8 Literature
Encourage critical thinking and emotional engagement with this Schoolio Grade 8 Poetry Study. Over four weeks, students explore diverse voices and poetic styles, analyzing structure, symbolism, and theme through close reading, discussion, and reflection activities.
Students will:
- Read and analyze four thought-provoking poems from a variety of authors and eras:
- “Hope” is the thing with feathers by Emily Dickinson
- Dreams by Langston Hughes
- Still I Rise by Maya Angelou
- [you fit into me] by Margaret Atwood
- Study poetic devices including repetition, metaphor, tone, structure, and mood
- Complete structured discussion and reflection pages for each poem
- Compare poems to one another and explore how imagery and style affect meaning
- Reflect on personal connections to each poem’s message and form
- Practice writing short original poems inspired by the texts
Each week includes daily poem reading, writing prompts, and guided reflections to support deep literary engagement and self-expression.
Recommended for ages 13–15 | Approximately 4 weeks of instruction depending on your chosen pacing
