Description
Grade 7 Writing Skills: Descriptive and Narrative Writing
In this two-part writing unit, Descriptive and Narrative Writing helps students expand their voice and creativity through detailed, purposeful storytelling. Students begin with descriptive writing focused on sensory details and emotional tone, then move into narrative writing centered on personal experience and the story arc.
Students will:
- Use sensory language to describe places, events, or memories in vivid detail
- Practice brainstorming and outlining techniques to organize descriptive ideas
- Write descriptive paragraphs that evoke imagery, mood, and emotion
- Learn the elements of a narrative story arc: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and denouement
- Craft a personal or fictional narrative with a clear purpose or lesson
- Edit and revise both writing pieces using peer and self-assessment strategies
Each week follows a structured writing schedule that includes brainstorming, writing, editing, and final presentation, supported by graphic organizers and model examples.
Recommended for ages 12–14 | Approximately 4 weeks of instruction depending on your chosen pacing
