Grade 5 Writing Skills: Letters and News Articles
In Letters and News Articles, Schoolio students practice two very different forms of writing: casual, personal communication and formal, fact-based reporting. Over four weeks, learners will build confidence writing informal letters to friends and family and craft unbiased news articles based on real or imagined events.
Students will:
- Write two informal letters, using correct structure and friendly tone
- Practice organizing ideas with graphic organizers and brainstorming pages
- Learn the parts of an informal letter, including sender’s address, date, greeting, body, sign-off, and signature
- Explore the difference between biased and unbiased writing in media
- Research and write a news article that answers the 5Ws (Who, What, Where, When, Why) and How
- Practice finding credible sources and including quotes from interviews or research
- Edit and produce final drafts for both letters and articles
Each week includes structured lessons in brainstorming, drafting, editing, and final production to build strong, practical writing skills.
Recommended for ages 10–12 | Approximately 4 weeks of instruction depending on your chosen pacing
