Grade 5 Writing Skills: Paragraphs and Fiction Writing

In this two-part Schoolio unit, students build writing confidence by developing strong paragraph structure and applying that structure to imaginative fiction writing. Over four weeks, learners will write multi-paragraph compositions using transitional sentences, then explore story elements and literary devices to craft their own fictional stories.

Students will:

• Review and expand on the Hamburger Paragraph model

• Learn how to connect paragraphs using transitional sentences

• Plan, write, and edit a two-paragraph composition on a topic of their choice

• Explore key elements of fiction: character, plot, setting, point of view, theme, and style

• Brainstorm story ideas and use a graphic organizer to map out story elements

• Practice using literary devices such as simile, metaphor, imagery, symbolism, and flashbacks

• Write and revise a short fictional story

Recommended for ages 10–12 | Approximately 4 weeks of instruction depending on your chosen pacing
