Lessons and Quizzes: Let’s Take a Look!

Ready to Learn:

You want to see what the Schoolio lessons and quizzes look like- we got you!

Schoolio lessons are designed to be short and simple. Why? A couple reasons!

One is our commitment to being neurodivergent-friendly. To this end, we keep our videos short to maximize attention spans while we have them. Our videos are free from rapid motion and frame-changing, which is distracting and adds to a child’s Cognitive Load.

Two is because studies show that while kids may *feel* more excited and engaged with video games and YouTube videos that flash and move rapidly, they actually learn and retain less when there is too much going on. Our videos focus on just a few points, and summarize them briefly. It’s better for a child who didn’t fully understand to watch the video over again, than for a child who did understand to get bored with redundancy and “switch off.”

Let’s look at Schoolio Quizzes!

Schoolio quizzes follow each lesson video. This is a brief test of knowledge and retention for your child.

Quizzes include multiple choice, true and false, connect, drag and drop, and more. We’ve designed our quizzes to be as interactive as possible!

All your child’s grades go into your parent dashboard. Not only do you see their grades, but the answers they gave as well.

All About Learning Modes banner

Scheduled Mode or Open Exploration?

Written version here, followed by audio/video version below.

In Scheduled Mode, you schedule lessons on the days and times that you want. You choose the courses you want your child to study from the marketplace, and then schedule the lessons into their timetable.

Schoolio Scheduled mode

This learning method is ideal for parents looking for a full-time homeschool solution, or children that thrive with structure and routine.

In Open Exploration Mode, you still choose the courses you want your child to study from the marketplace, but you don’t do any scheduling. You can choose from all the courses you’ve chosen which are visible to your child in their portal, and your child decides what they learn and when.

This learning method is ideal for parents looking for after-school engagement, interest-based learning, or a more unschooling approach.

You can switch back-and-forth from Scheduled Mode to Open Exploration Mode anytime and as often as you like in your child’s settings. You can also have different children in different modes, to best accommodate each learner’s needs!

Student Portal: Learning Modes

Wondering what it each Learning Mode looks like from your kiddo’s perspective?

scheduled mode view

In Scheduled Mode, your student only sees the lessons you’ve assigned, in the order you’ve assigned them. Lessons “unlock” for the student once the day and time you assigned them for has passed.

open exploration mode

In Open Exploration Mode, your student sees all the courses you’ve assigned to them, and they can choose which courses to explore and when.

“Play” launches the next unfinished lesson. Clicking on the folder icon shows all the lessons.

If they open all lessons in Open Exploration Mode, they can see which they’ve done and not done, and choose which they’d like to play.

student onboarding

Schoolio’s Student Onboarding

New students logging into their Schoolio Student Portal for the first time will be offered our Explorer Onboarding Experience.

Here’s what we’ve designed and why it’s important:

onboarding 1

Learning Style & Delivery Preference

We’re learning how your child learns best, so you know how to choose delivery methods and create an ideal learning environment.

onboarding 2

Interests & Engagement

By uncovering your child’s underlying curiosities and passions, we can start recommending topics and helping them discover more within their areas of interest.

Ownership & Empowerment

When we get our kids involved in the process, by thinking about what they want to learn and where they’d like to improve, we empower them to be active in their own education, which improves their engagement, cooperation, and retention.

We continue to work towards building a learning community that is not only a place for academics, but is a space where you can learn more about how to best support your child and improve their overall learning experience!

Happy learning!

vibe check

The Schoolio Vibe Check

The Schoolio Vibe Check is built around our belief that there’s more to education than just grades on a report card.

Vibe Check is a quick, non-invasive daily check-in with students to see how they are feeling emotionally.

Your student response to Vibe Check displays in your Parent Dashboard. This allows you to see how your child feels about learning and notice when they may be struggling emotionally so you can intervene.

This is just one of the ways we continue to strive towards a truly holistic learning model.

The Schoolio Marketplace: Let’s Get Learning Started!

The Schoolio Marketplace is one of the first stops on your new Schoolio adventure! This is where you’ll find all the courses we have and can start building your perfect-fit program!

**Update as of Fabruary 2025, the button now says “More Courses” to take you to the Marketplace.

The marketplace

From your parent portal, there are 3 ways to access the Marketplace.

marketplace filters

You can filter by grade level, subject, and country. You can also use the search bar to find topics your kids will love learning about!

Add everything you want to your cart and then checkout. All your courses are now in your student’s courseload.

Now your courses are ready to be scheduled if you’re using Scheduled Mode.

Happy learning!

grade mix and matching

Grade Mix-and-Matching

You can mix-and-match grade levels as much as you like in the Schoolio library! We will auto-load some foundational courses in the grade level you chose at sign up, but these are just to get you started!

In the marketplace, you can filter or search to find what you’re looking for.

Most courses are labelled by grade ranges, so don’t be afraid to assign fun courses from other grades!

The grade range tells you the approximate level the language and activities are geared towards, but you can easily alter activities to suit an older or younger child.

Some courses are labelled as All Ages, this means they are suitable for any beginner to the topic. The activities will be aimed a mid-level.

By adding interest-based courses and letting your child be an active participant in choosing what they learn, your child will be more engaged and will learn more!

readiness checks and assessments math

Getting Started with Math Assessments

For every grade there are two types of Math assessments available for you.

The Readiness Assessment will come preloaded into your child’s course load. You can find the Final Assessment and other grade levels in the Marketplace.

The Readiness Assessments test all the concepts learned in the previous grade. For example, Grade 8 Readiness Assessment tests all the grade 7 skills. This can be used as a placement test to check for readiness to begin the grade level.

The Final Assessment tests all the concepts from the current grade. For example, Grade 8 Final Assessment tests all the grade 8 skills.

One of the unique features of Schoolio is that we unitize our Math into strands.

This allows for more specific personalization, as some students will be at different levels for different strands.

After your child completes the assessment, you’ll be able to see their score and the recommendation that they start that grade level, or review some skills from the previous year.

Finding the right level in each strand is the key to success over frustration or boredom!

Let’s Start Learning!: How to Schedule a Single Lesson

Here’s how to add a single lesson to your student’s schedule!

This feature is great for scheduling just one lesson at a time. There are two ways to get started. Choose Schedule Lesson directly from the timetable to schedule any lesson from any course.

The other way is to go to a specific course and select Schedule. This opens up the course you selected and you can see all the lessons inside.

Now you can schedule specific lessons from this course by clicking on the calendar icon.

All your scheduled lessons will appear in your student’s timetable and in their student portal! You’re ready to start learning!

scheduling recurring lessons

Scheduling: How to Schedule Recurring Lessons

Sometimes you want to schedule a course to follow a set schedule- like having Science every Tuesday and Thursday. That’s where scheduling recurring lessons comes in handy!

Choose the course you’d like to put on  recurring schedule. Click “schedule”.

Choose “schedule unit” to schedule the whole unit at once.

Choose the day(s) of the week you’d like the lessons to recur. For example, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:00.

Your lessons have been scheduled! You’ll see the date of each lesson listed below. When you go back to your timetable, the lessons will be scheduled!

Rescheduling Within Your Timetable: How to Drag and Drop Rescheduling

Once you’ve created your schedule, you can see it in your student timetable. But what if you want to make a change? It’s easier than going into the lesson itself to reschedule now, with the  calendar drag and drop option!

Simply click on and “grab” the lesson you want to move, and drag it to the new time slot.

For individually scheduled lessons, you’ll be asked to confirm you want to move the lesson.

For recurring scheduled lessons, you have the option of changing the one lesson only or all following lessons.

For example, if you’ve scheduled Science on Tuesdays at 3pm, you may want to move one lesson on one day, or you may want to move all lessons to a new time slot.

This feature makes rescheduling simple and quick!

custom break

Scheduling: Add a Custom Break

Here’s How It Works

There are two ways to add a break to your student calendar. Let’s look at how to add a break for a custom date range!

Create custom breaks using your own date ranges. Select a Start Date and Time, then select an End Date and Time.

Click Add a Break.

Now when you create a recurring schedule for your courses, they will automatically skip the days for which you’ve created breaks!

Any existing scheduled lessons in the Break Period you just added will be bumped to the next available day.

One cool hack for this too- if you have a sick day, snow day, what-have-you, you can add a break in the PAST for the day you missed, and all the lessons for that day will be automatically bumped forward! Saves you have to reschedule everything!

public holidays breaks

Scheduling: Adding Public Holidays

Here’s How It Works

There are two ways to add a break to your student calendar. Let’s look at how to add public holidays to your calendar!

Head to the Schedule Center and choose Add a Break.

Select the Public Holidays tab.

You can choose to add all holidays or just the ones you want to take off or celebrate.

You can also choose between US or Canadian holidays.

Now you’ll see the holidays on your calendar. They’re marked as breaks, so you won’t be able to schedule lessons on those days.

Any lessons already scheduled on those days will be bumped to the next available day.

print schedule

Scheduling: Print Your Schedule

Did you know that you can print your student’s timetable after you design it in your Parent Portal?

I like to put ours on the fridge!

Here’s How It Works

Log in to your Parent Portal and navigate to your timetable. Click Print Schedule! Download and save and you’re all set!

Student Portal: Seeing Your Timetable

timetable 1

This is a feature we added because parents and students were asking for it! Your student can now see their timetable in their student portal!

This feature is great for kids who like to know what the plan is! Having their timetable at a glance is especially supportive of neirodivergent students who thrive on consistency, schedule, and knowing the routine.

Scheduling: Scope & Sequence

A program’s Scope & Sequence is the concepts taught and the order they are taught in.

Schoolio is highly customizable, allowing you to control the courses your child takes, as well as the ability to skip lessons, add your own lessons, and reorder lessons within those courses.

Click here to see the default Scope & Sequence for Schoolio Math and Language Arts if used without alterations or customizations.

badges and certificates

Teacher Resources: Badges & Certificates

Every course has Teacher Resources to help you teach your child.

Badges show at the top of each course in your Parent Portal. They are in greyscale until your child completes the course, then it turns full color. At that time it is also awarded to your student in their Student Portal.

Certificates: The top “lesson” of every course contains your certificate and answer key for the course.

You can view and/or download the certificate from inside the Teacher Resources lesson.

Download the certificate and fill it out to award it to your student!

student badges

Student Portal: Your Badges

From the Student Portal, your child can see the badges they’ve earned anytime.

Log into the Student Portal and navigate to your Completed Lessons.

Here you can see all the badges you’ve earned so far! By hovering your mouse over the badge, it will show you the course the badge is for.

answer keys

Teacher Resources: Answer Keys

The top lesson of every course contains the answer key (and course certificate) for the course.

You can view and/or download the answer key from inside the Teacher Resources lesson.

Don’t forget to mark the lesson with your answer key “complete”, so your child gets their badge when they finish the course.

Scheduling Made Easy: How to Reorder Lessons

Did you know that you can change the order of the lessons in any Schoolio course? Let’s see how!

Head into the course you want to customize by selecting it from your course load area.

Simply “grab” the lesson you want to move, and drag it to where you’d like it to be.

This feature is especially helpful if you add your own custom lessons to a unit. You may add additional work days, some extra practice work, a field trip, or anything else. Then you can reorder the lessons to have the new custom lessons wherever you like.

Don’t forget to click Save Lesson Order when you’re done to save your new customization!

Customizing: Add a Custom Lesson to Any Schoolio Course

You can add your own custom lessons to any Schoolio course! This allows you to assign extra work or add in days for field trips or experiments or other projects. You can add on and expand as much as you like from the base Schoolio programming!

Simply open the course you want to customize, and scroll to the bottom to select Add Custom Lesson.

You can add all the details of your custom lesson. This can be as involved or simple as you need. Give your lesson a title, and then you can customize the duration, add notes for your student, include PDFs, URLs and other resources.

If a URL you add to your lesson is from YouTube, it will render as the main video in your lesson and your student will not have to leave the Schoolio platform to view it.

This feature allows you to create a completely personalized journey for each of your children or students.

Custom Courses: Your Ultimate Tool

Custom Courses are a much loved feature at Schoolio. Here’s how to create your own custom courses and why you’ll LOVE this tool!

You can use Custom Courses to keep EVERYTHING in your life organized in ONE place! Homeschool families use custom courses for all sorts of things, like: Content You Create, Content from the Schoolio Bookstore, Content from Other Places and Sellers, Your Kids’ Chores, Extracurriculars and Sports, Field Trips, Co-Op, and Other Activities. What will YOU use it for?

Start by creating a new course and giving it a name!

You can create multiple units within a course, this let’s you categorize and organize!

custom courses 1 and 2

You can have multiple units with lessons, or just one unit. The choice is yours!

In every lesson, you can add details, including a video your child will watch, PDF attachments for them to read or print and work on, URLs for them to watch, and notes from you!

Where did the course you just made go? You’ll find it in the Marketplace, under “My Library”.

Once you’ve made your custom course, you can also assign it to any of your students.

Choose any of your students to assign the new course too. Then you can schedule it just like you do for Schoolio courses. And different students can have different schedules!

going offline and PDFs

Going Offline & PDFs

Travelling? Need a screen break? Want to practice handwriting? There’s lots of reasons you may want to go offline sometimes.

Below each lesson video and digital quiz are the PDF versions of both the lesson and the activity. So you can choose to go offline for the activity only or for both!

You can view and/or download the PDF. If you want to print, download the PDF to your computer, and then print from there.

You can alsoo annotate the PDF directly on your screen. This gives you even more options- you can use the pen icon to draw with a finger or use a tablet pen, or you can choose the T icon to type directly onto the PDF.

Don’t forget to save your work if you want to look back on it later!

lessons with no quizzes

Why Do Some Lessons Not Have Quizzes?

Some Schoolio lessons don’t have digital quizzes. Why is that?

We believe that a well-rounded education needs to include some hands-on learning opportunities, such as science experiments, research projects, art, real-world explorations, and writing projects.

These take learning above and beyond the limitations of online quizzing to create a complete and robust curriculum.

The hybrid design of our program is intentional, and what elevates our program above the limitations of other online learning platforms!

manually mark a lesson complete

How to Manually Mark a Lesson Complete

If you choose to do work offline, you will want to mark the lessons you’ve done as complete in your Parent Portal.

Head to the course in your student’s course load that has the lesson(s) you want to mark complete.

Toggle from “Not Started” to “Completed”.

You have the option of adding a grade if you’d like. This will add the grade to your dashboard analytics.

If you leave the grade blank, it doesn’t get added to their average (it’s not a zero, it’s just not included).

Parent Dashboard: Transcripts

Here’s a feature that helps with your record keeping and reporting!

Depending on where in the world you’re homeschooling, you may need to submit attendance records, portfolios, or transcripts. We’re making that process easier for you by tweaking features to meet your needs.

Here’s How It Works

Head to your Dashboard and click More to see your student’s grades.

Click View Transcript.

This is where you get to choose the start and end date for the courses you want included in your transcript.

This is by DATE not by GRADE so that you can still mix and match grade levels as needed to create a custom year for your child!

And then BOOM, you have a transcript showing courses completed in the date range you selected!

You can now download and print as needed!
